The Software Engineer Internship Program at UNU C3 aims to engage those who are interested in getting acquainted with and taking an active part in the day-to day-operations of an ICT department of a global university. From networking to disaster recovery planning, and from surveying end-users to responding to end-user software issues, interns will work to further their skills’ development in a range of ICT areas under guidance and supervision.

Criteria

The ideal candidate

  • is majoring or has majored in a computing related degree or is currently pursuing or has recently completed postgraduate studies (master’s or doctoral), preferably in a computing related field;
  • is able to demonstrate a passion for a particular area of computing, be it software development, networking, user interface design, etc;
  • is familiar with virtual communication and collaboration methods;
  • is proficient in written and spoken English;
  • demonstrates resourcefulness and creativity in problem-solving;
  • possesses Web design experience

Working Environment and Conditions

An internship with C3 is a chance to be part of a dynamic, multi-cultural team. C3 operates a flat department structure so all staff are accessible and easy to talk to.

Work Assignments

Interns in C3 have the opportunity to engage in a number of ongoing projects, which include but are not limited to the following topics:

  • Federated authentication and SSO mechanisms
  • Lightweight, reproducible, and portable development environments
  • Containers and microservices
  • Database clustering and load balancing
  • Database security using advances from cryptography
  • Blockchain business technologies (e.g., Solidity and Hyperledger Composer)
  • Mobile apps development
  • Programming languages and web frameworks
  • Agile software development methods and tools
  • Enterprise data warehouse solutions
  • Business intelligence
  • Data mining (e.g., keyword extraction, text analysis, topic visualization)
  • Document management systems
  • Use of modeling, adaptation and personalization technologies to design intelligent websites and information portals
  • Open source indexing and related technologies
  • Applications of crowdsourcing/collective intelligence in support of UN initiatives
  • Applications of social networking to support knowledge sharing and debates on possible solutions to global pressing problems

Program Features

A three-month project-based, hands-on internship with flexible working arrangement and possibility of extension; Remote collaboration with occasional virtual team meeting using Internet technologies; A project presentation prior to completion of the internship (optional), and End of program evaluation (both intern’s performance evaluation and program evaluation by the intern).

Program Benefits

The program provides both tangible and intangible benefits for the interns, which include, but are not limited to: An opportunity to gain valuable international experience and expand global professional network; a great opportunity to learn how technology fits into a United Nations agency; a certificate of internship confirming the scheduled assignment has been undertaken and completed as well as a written recommendation upon successful completion of the internship.

Commitment

The interns are required to commit 15-20 hours per week for at least six months. To build a mutual bonding, the interns also are required to sign an agreement of rights and responsibilities.
